Position description

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and has occasional openings for temporary non-tenure track lecturers (Unit 18) for Academic years Winter 23/24 and 24/25.

The HWSPH has focal areas of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services and Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Health Equity and Justice, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Policy, Public Mental Health, and Technology & Precision Health and offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our BS in Public Health, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with SDSU), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Rady School of Management, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School is comprised of more than 125 primary faculty and academics, 25 secondary faculty, and 200 staff members and provides instruction and mentorship to 700 BSPH majors and 225 postgraduate students, and the School’s faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.

Classes may be in person, online, or mixed. Appointments may be part or full-time, for 1, 2, or 3 classes per quarter and 1, 2, or 3 quarters in duration in an academic year. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must be in the process of obtaining or have obtained an advanced terminal degree in a program related to public health.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPh, other related doctoral degree, or other related terminal degree (e.g. MPH, RD) by the start date of appointment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred qualifications

Candidates with research or practice experience relevant to the course(s) to which they are applying to teach and/or prior college-level teaching experience are preferred; experience can be as a teaching assistant.
